Armantrout was born in 1947 in Vallejo, California but grew up in San Diego. Her honors include a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Critics Circle Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. She has published ten books of poetry. She currently teaches at the University of California, San Diego, where she is Professor of Poetry and Poetics.

Zhijuan Ni was born in Hubei Province in China in 1970. She holds a PHD degree in philosophy. She has published a number of translations in poetry. She teaches and lives in Hangzhou.

So these are the hills of home. Hazy tiers   
nearly subliminal. To see them is to see   
double, hear bad puns delivered with a wink.   
An untoward familiarity. 

Rising from my sleep, the road is more 
and less the road. Around that bend are pale   
houses, pairs of junipers. Then to look 
reveals no more.
