This Dusky Garden

In this dusky garden, a line of pagoda trees, willows, their trim syntax broken by lilac plumes. In this dusky garden, crickets' curious tremolos trill their bodies’ fretful joy. Who knows what they hear in dew and moonlight, what truth they touch. At each step, velvetleaf brushes your pantlegs as nightshade rolls its black eyes. On the glittering syllables of goosegrass, morning glory vines older than your grandmother, you slip, tumbling into fragrance, find yourself crawling through the small thorns of Japanese hop. This low pigweed, solemn flax, perpetual inheritors, do they never protest, never wail? In the quiet psalm of this dark garden you find not death, but endless peace.
