D.H. 劳伦斯

D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930), an English poet, novelist, and critic, produced about 800 poems during his lifetime and published some10 volumes in poetry. Lawrence began writing poetry at the time when 'Imagism' was seeking more concrete expression, and he contributed considerably to Imagist Anthologies. Later on, Lawrence took a revolution further than the Imagists, writing accessible poetry that was immediately appealing. A great number of his poems were free verse.

劳伦斯 (1885-1930) 是近代的英国诗人、小说家、和批评家。他一生写了八百首诗和出版了大约十本诗集。当他开始写诗时, “意象派” 还有待具体的表现;他对意象派的选集贡献很大。后来,劳伦斯作了比意象派更进一步的改革,写出易懂的诗,且扣人心弦。他的诗有很大部份是自由诗。

夏菁
Hsia Ching

夏菁,是盛志澄的笔名,1925年生于浙江嘉兴.美国科罗拉多州立大学硕士,曾任联合国专家及科罗拉多教授等职。夏菁是台湾 “蓝星诗社” 创始人之一。自1954年 出版第一本诗集起,已有九种,包括近年出版的《雪岭》(2003)和《夏菁短诗选》(2004)等。

Hsia Ching, the pen name of Ted (Tse) C. Sheng, was born in Zhejiang, China in 1925. He received his M.S. degree from the Colorado State University (1966) and has worked with the United Nations and taught at the Colorado State University. Hsia Ching was one of the founders of the Blue Stars Poetry Society in Taiwan in early Fifties. Since his first collection of poems published in 1954, he has produced a total of nine volumes of poems including the recent two: A Snow-capped Peak (2003) and Selected Poems of Hsia Ching (2004).

Down the stone stairs Girls with their large eyes wide with tragedy Lift looks of shocked and momentous emotion up at me. And I smile. Ladies Stepping like birds with their bright and pointed feet Peer anxiously forth, as if for a boat to carry them out of wreckage; And among the wreck of the theatre crowed I stand and smile. They take tragedy so becomingly; Which pleases me. But when I meet the weary eyes The reddened, aching eyes of the bar-man with thin arms, I am glad to go back to where I came from.

 

走下石级 女孩们以充满悲剧的大眼 激动和严重地抬头望着我。 我微笑。 仕女们 以尖细光滑之足像小鸟般走下 向前急切张望,如盼望一艘船前来搭救; 在这些沉船的观众之间 我站着而且微笑。 他们如此地易於接受悲剧 使我觉得好笑。 但当我遇到一双疲困的眼睛 一双酒保红红的,痛苦的眼睛和他羸弱的手臂时, 我乐于回到我来的地方去。

The Gods! The Gods!

神祇!神祇!

People were bathing, and posturing themselves on the beach and all was dreary, great robot limbs, robot breasts robot voices, robot even the gay umbrellas. But a woman, shy and alone, was washing herself under a tap and the glimmer of the presence of the gods was like lilies, and like water-lilies.

 

人们在水边沐浴,在沙滩上扭妮作态 全是乏味的机械人的四肢,机械人的乳房 机械人的声音,甚至花洋伞也是。 可是一个含羞和孤独的女人,在水笼头下洗涤 在幽微的光影中显身的神祗像百合, 像水仙。

A White Blossom

一朵白花

A tiny moon as small and white as a single jasmine flower Leans all alone above my window, on night’s wintry bower, Liquid as lime-tree blossom, soft as brilliant water or rain She shines, the first white love of my youth, passionless and in vain.

 

一个小小的月亮、皎洁玲珑如一朵茉莉 孤单地斜依在我的窗上,在这冬晚的寝室裡, 澄彻如柠檬的花朵,柔和像灿烂的水或雨珠 它照耀着,我洁白的初恋,无情且无果。

The White Horse

白马

The youth walks up to the white horse, to put its halter on And the horse looks at him in silence. They are so silent they are in another world.

 

那青年走到白马旁,将韁绳按上 这匹马静静地望着他 他们是如此静谧,他们在另一个世界里。

The Mosquito Knows

蚊虫知道

The mosquito knows full well, small as he is he's a beast of prey. But after all he only takes his bellyful, he doesn't put my blood in the bank.

 

蚊虫知道得很清楚,他虽然小 却是一个食肉兽。 但究竟 他只装满自己的肚腹, 并未将我的血存入银行。
