D.H. Lawrence

D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930), an English poet, novelist, and critic, produced about 800 poems during his lifetime and published some10 volumes in poetry. Lawrence began writing poetry at the time when 'Imagism' was seeking more concrete expression, and he contributed considerably to Imagist Anthologies. Later on, Lawrence took a revolution further than the Imagists, writing accessible poetry that was immediately appealing. A great number of his poems were free verse.

Humming-Bird

I can imagine, in some otherworld Primeval-dumb, far back In that most awful stillness, that only gasped and hummed, Humming-birds raced down the avenues. Before anything had a soul, While life was a heave of Matter, half inanimate, This little bit chipped off in brilliance And went whizzing through the slow, vast, succulent stems. I believe there were no flowers then, In the world where the humming-bird flashed ahead of creation. I believe he pierced the slow vegetable veins with his long beak. Probably he was big As mosses, and little lizards, they say, were once big. Probably he was a jabbing, terrifying monster. We look at him through the wrong end of the telescope of Time, Luckily for us.

Prayer

Give the moon at my feet Put my feet upon the crescent, like a Lord! O let my ankles be bathed in moonlight, that I may go sure and moon-shod, cool and bright-footed towards my goal For the sun is hostile, now his face is like the red lion, ...

Nothing to Save

There is nothing to save, now all is lost, but a tiny core of stillness in the heart like the eye of a violet.

Self-Pity

自怜

I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.

Search for Love

Those that go searching for love only make manifest their own lovelessness, and the loveless never find love, only the loving find love, and they never have to seek for it.
