Carl Sandburg

Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) was born in Illinois, the son of Swedish immigrants. His working and traveling experiences greatly influenced his writing and political views. He saw first-hand the sharp contrast between rich and poor, and passionately championed for the everyday working person through his writings.

Anna Imroth

Cross the hands over the breast here─so. Straighten the legs a little more─so. And call for the wagon to come and take her home. Her mother will cry some and so will her sisters and brothers. But all of the others got down and they are safe and this is the only one of the factory girls who wasn't lucky in making the jump when the fire broke It is the hand of God and the lack of fire escapes.

Soup

I saw a famous man eating soup. I say he was lifting a fat broth Into his mouth with a spoon. His name was in the newspapers that day Spelled out in tall black headlines And thousands of people were talking about him. When I saw him, He sat bending his head over a plate Putting soup in his mouth with a spoon.
