William Carlos Williams

William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) was born in Rutherford, New Jersey. A pediatrician practiced in his hometown, he was a major poet of the Imagist movement and a major writer in the modernist movement, helping to create a clear American voice.

威廉斯(1883-1963)在他的出生地新泽西州的一个小镇上度过一生。他是小儿科医生,他的许多短诗便是在看病之暇用打字机敲出来的。写诗以外,还写小说,剧本,评文。在他晚年,他的诗被黑山派奉为典范。他可能是美国诗人中读者最多的一位。



The Act

There were the roses, in the rain. Don't cut them, I pleaded. They won't last, she said But they're so beautiful Where they are. Agh, we were all beautiful once, she said, and cut them and gave them to me in my hand.

As the cat climbed over the top of the jamcloset first the right forefoot carefully then the hind stepped down into the pit of the empty flowerpot

I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast Forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold
